However, rust is good because it strengthens the staples' holding power and makes it more difficult to pull out. What's the difference between curved top and square top staples (stakes)? Square top staples are typically used for securing landscape fabrics, artificial turfs, & sod, while round top staples are used to hold down piping and tubes. What gauge of drip tubing staples should I buy? The lower the gauge, the thicker & stronger the metal. Use lower gauge staples (ex: 8 gauge) for harder soils, use higher gauge staples (ex: 11 gauge) for regular soils. 11-gauge staples are suitable for most applications. What gauge of size drip tubing staples should I buy? Longer staples work better in looser soils. The added length ensures that the staples will not move after installation. For most soils, 6" staples will work. For looser soils use 9 or 12” staples.
